History

Following the introduction of natural gas at a national level, Beiragás – Companhia de Gás das Beiras, S.A. was awarded the concession in 1998 to operate the Natural Gas Regional Distribution Network of the Central Inland Region, under a public service regime.

The concession area covers the districts of Castelo Branco, Guarda and Viseu, in a total of 59 municipalities, some of which are in the district of Coimbra. This territory spans 20,500 km2 (23% of mainland Portugal’s surface area) and is inhabited by 900,000 people (10% of its population). It accounts for 6% of mainland Portugal’s energy consumption. Of the 59 municipalities, 19 are included in the network projects for the first five years of activity.

Key dates in the creation of Beiragás:

  • The concession for the Regional Distribution of Natural Gas in the Central Inland Region was created by Council of Ministers Resolution No. 199/97 of October 24th. It encompassed the districts of Castelo Branco, Guarda, Viseu and Coimbra that had not yet been awarded a concession.
  • The Council of Ministers’ Resolution no. 146/98, of November 25th, awarded the Beiragás consortium the concession for the exploration of the Central Inland Natural Gas Distribution Network and the construction of the respective infrastructures.
  • On 98/08/04, Beiragás submitted the basic project for the concession contract tender. The contract for the Central Inland Natural Gas Distribution Network concession was signed in Castelo Branco on November 29th, 1998. February 1999 marks the date of the application for the concession licence from the Energy Authority.
  • On 00/08/18, the DREC officially informed Beiragás that, by order issued on 00/08/08 by his Excellency, the Secretary for Industry and Energy, the primary network projects were approved.
  • During 1999 and 2000, Beiragás developed the detailed design of the primary and secondary networks.
  • In 2001, Beiragás started the construction of the 1st Phase of primary networks (Mangualde/Nelas, Guarda, Covilhã/Tortosendo, Viseu) and secondary networks (Tondela, Viseu, Guarda and Covilhã).
